Summer Efficiency and Your Water Heater

In the summer, your energy bills can skyrocket as you start to use your comfort system more and more. You don’t want to simply shut off your AC system and feel uncomfortable for the summer. But not to worry—there are plenty of other ways to save energy and remain comfortable throughout the season. And one of the easiest places to cut down on energy spending is your water heater.

Upgrade the Water Heater

Of course, we don’t recommend this if your system is only a few years old. But eventually, replacing your water heater is really all you can do to make sure your hot water system works efficiently. Replace your water heater after 12 years or so, so that it will not fail unexpectedly when you need it the most.

Besides, you can upgrade to a tankless water heater if your conventional tank water heater is draining your energy bills. Tankless units only heat water as needed, when you open a hot water tap. That means they don’t have to keep running all day, taking up too much energy.

Turn Up the Temperature

This is an easy way to cut down on spending. Check the temperature gauge on your water heater tank. Many are set to a default temperature of about 140 degrees Fahrenheit. But you really only need it to be 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Turn it down, and you’ll never have to readjust it.

Insulate

Insulating the water heater may help to improve its efficiency. You can often find premade covers designed just for the unit you use. You can also insulate the pipe leading out of the water heater, if need be, by simply wrapping newspaper or finding pipe insulation. This is more necessary in cold areas than in warm ones.

Schedule Maintenance

Calling for water heater maintenance from friendly local technicians can also help you to save money. A maintenance visit includes an inspection of the entire water heater system. Then, you’ll get a tune-up that may help you to save money. Flushing the water heater tank, for example, may help it to operate more efficiently, eliminating any unnecessary spending on a system that is full of mineral deposits.
