What Is Pipe Relining?

Inside-Tunnel-large-pipeLet’s say you’ve recently been told that your home’s drain pipes are in jeopardy. Many of the pipes are underneath your property in places where, to access the entire length of the pipe, a plumber would normally need to dig up stretches of your yard in order to access them. That means you can lose parts of your landscaping, driveway, sidewalks, and more.

Pipe relining helps to alleviate this stress. With this process, technicians do not actually need to do such an extreme level of digging. Also known as trenchless pipe relining, this professional service eliminates trenches in favor of just one or two holes in your yard—or none at all.

How Trenchless Pipe Relining Works

Instead of digging a hole in your yard, a plumber can essentially feed a new pipe lining through the old pipe in your yard that has ruptured or started to corrode. They may be able to do this through a cleanout access point or by digging a hole to access one portion of the pipes. While typically used for sewer pipes, trenchless pipe lining can be used on any pipe with a diameter of 1.5 inches or more.

The process involves finding the access point and first cleaning out the pipes with a hydro jetter, a high-pressure hose that blasts residue and debris out of the pipe. A new pipe lining can be inserted into the old pipe using hydraulic equipment and a plumber’s expertise. The pipe lining is coated in epoxy to seal it into place within a few hours.

The Benefits of Trenchless Relining

The best benefit of trenchless relining: less stress! See how trenchless relining makes a difference in how your pipes are renewed.

  • The work is completed in less than a day for the typical pipe.
  • There’s no property damage or large equipment on the property.
  • You can save up to 50% over conventional repairs (when you factor in what you save on yard, sidewalk, and street repairs).
  • The new pipe may last 50 years or more.

Who Can Provide Pipe Relining Services?

Trenchless pipe relining is not, as you have seen, a DIY project. And it’s not necessarily something that every plumber has access to. If you call a plumber for pipe repair, they may quote you a price for pipe relining without factoring in the possibility of trenchless relining, just hoping to make a sale. When you shop around for plumbers, make sure you ask whether trenchless relining is an option from this company!
