How to Tell If You Need Drain Cleaning

Some homeowners might think this is a silly topic. It’s obvious when you need your drains cleaned, right? Who would miss a drain clog?

Well, it’s not actually that simple. Sure, clogs are a sure sign that you need your drains cleaned, but sometimes you can notice this issue building up before the drain actually clogs. In fact, a clog itself is usually formed after months of neglect that might be showing signs in other ways.

Today, we’re going to talk about advice on when your drain needs to be cleaned. As your local plumber in West Palm Beach, FL, we want to share some of our expertise and knowledge to let you better know when to call our team for help. Between having clear drains and drain clogs, there are various signs to look for that might signal an imminent need for drain cleaning.

Signs of Troubled Plumbing

Your plumbing system works in the dark most of the time. Unless your pipes are made of glass, which we hope they aren’t, you won’t be able to exactly see the condition of your drains and really know for a fact that you need your drains cleaned. That being said, there are some telltale signs that indicate a drain in need. Keep reading below as we go through them one by one.

Bad Odors

Your drain is designed specifically to mitigate bad odors and trap sewer gases before they can enter your home. This is necessary because nobody would want to use a drain that constantly smelled foul. However, clogs and issues with materials restricting the flow of your drains can call all of these things into question. If your drain is starting to reek every time you stand near it, then there could be something clogging the P trap, which is what is mainly used to trap the bad odors.

Gurgling Noise

Gurgling is always a sign that there’s restricted air flow. That’s because gurgling is produced by air bubbles that are periodically released through a partially closed opening (in the same way you gurgle when brushing your teeth). If your drain is starting to gurgle loudly while you use it, chances are that there’s something blocking air and water flow. This can usually be a precursor to a whole drain clog, so why not get it cleaned before your system clogs up.

Slow Drains

Similarly to a gurgling noise, slow drains are a precursor to clogged drains. A slow drain can mean that a clog is forming but hasn’t actually completely stopped the flow of water yet. If your drain is starting to slow down more and more to the point where you’re watching it drain at a snail’s pace, then call us for drain cleaning services.

If all of your home’s drains are draining slowly, you could have something much worse going on inside your plumbing system. This can indicate an issue with your sewer system, or something else that can only be remedied by a professional plumber.
