A Handy Plumbing Glossary

One of the hardest aspects of being a homeowner these days is the sheer amount of materials, processes, and equipment that are required for certain tasks. Whether you’d like to prevent a drain clog, or simply evaluate the price of work, you’re quickly going to get lost as you encounter some huge roadblocks that are impossible to ignore. We’d like to help you out in two specific ways today.

The first way we want to help is by ensuring you that our team can take care of everything at an affordable rate. We provide expert plumbing in West Palm Beach, FL and we’ll always get the job done right, with the right equipment and materials to your specification.

The other way we can help today is by providing you with a handy glossary of terms that you might want to know when investing in plumbing work locally.

Plumbing Terms You Should Know

These terms aren’t so you can just turn around and do plumbing work yourself. Professional plumbing services require training, equipment, and certain skills that not all homeowners have, and it can be even more expensive to try something on your own. With that in mind, these glossary definitions are important for you to know what services to sign up for, and how to spot a qualified professional when searching for plumbers.

  • PVC. This one is easy for homeowners to forget about, but it’s one of the most important vocabulary words to remember. PVC stands for Polyvinyl Choloride, and it basically refers to those (usually white) plastic pipes that can run under your sink or in other areas of your home. It’s vinyl, which means it’s a sturdy plastic that can easily handle cold water for years in your house. It’s one of the most affordable and common plumbing materials on the market, and you might want it for your next plumbing upgrade!
  • Auger. An auger is a tool that is versatile. It can be used with anything on the end of it, and the auger generally refers to a wire or tube that is sent down your drain. Hydro jets are augers, because they have a water pump attached at the end of the flexible tube. There are other types of augers too, depending on what work needs to be done.
  • Toilet flapper. Toilets are complex machines. They use a flapper and a balloon to keep water inside the tank and flush it when the flusher is pushed. The flapper is the part that plugs the tank.
  • Main line. A “main water line” refers to the pipe system that brings water from the municipal water source to your house. All the clean water you deal with comes from your main water line.
  • P or S traps. P traps exist under your sinks and S traps describe how a toilet drain functions. Each trap describes a different type of drain and is used to deal with sewer gases and ensure wastewater drains appropriately.
  • Valve. Valves describe small areas of your plumbing that can shut off water flow or keep water flowing in a single direction. Any time you see a plumbing pipe flow into a small component, that’s usually going to be a valve!
